Owies

A dog attacked Carter today. Our fuzzy buddy is doing OK. We're still trying to get the details about the attacker, a neighborhood dog that has gone after him before. The owner did not have the dog (who goes by the name "Homey") on a leash, so there are some issues here. We've called Animal Control, and Carter is at the vet right now. He has some bite punctures on his back legs and underside. He's getting x-rays right now. He's been a sweet trooper through it. Updates as we get more info.

[I'm sorry to break into a rant on Carter's blog, but here I go...]

There's a part of me that envies dog owners whose dogs walk politely at their sides with no leash. But a few events have led me to realize that many of these owners do not know their dogs half as well as they think they do. Or, at any rate, Mackie must be so exceptionally beautiful that dogs forget their training and need to rush at him... even if it means running across traffic. (Yes,this has happened about four times).

On one occasion a bunch of hippies were walking with a Boston Terrier. The terrier broke from their group, ran straight at Mackie and affixed itself to Mackie's neck. Mackie, being much bigger, eventually shook the terrier off and this time got a hold of his neck. Finally I separate them. ...Except the other dog has no one or nothing to restrain him so he comes at Mackie again.

Finally, the hippies catch up, and wrestle the dog by the neck, Cesar Milan-style. They then had the audacity to lecture me that *this* is how you restrain your dog. And maybe that's so, but we have been attempting to train Mackie through positive reinforcement. Maybe P.R. out not to be ultimately effective, but it works well enough if other jerks keep their dogs on leashes. Oh, and at the end of it all, the hippies say that their dog "has never done this before." Like I said, many of them don't know their own pets as well as they think they do.

Hope Carter is OK.
